Cable Installed in FedExForum, Memphis' New NBA Arena
Gepco Cable: As Strong as a Grizzly
For the Memphis Grizzlies, the 2004-2005 NBA season promises to be full of excitement. Coming off the franchise's most successful season since its inception into the league as the Vancouver Grizzlies, Memphis follows its first playoff appearance with the opening of the FedExForum, an 18,400-seat arena located one-half block south of historic Beale Street in downtown Memphis.
An integral cog in the upcoming Grizzlies' season is Gepco® International, a leading provider of studio and broadcast audio/video cables. Gepco provided over 635,000 feet of cable for installation at the FedExForum. This cable was installed by The HD Group, Inc., a broadcast systems integrator specializing in sports applications contracted to handle the broadcast, DTV and satellite system cabling to support the broadcast trucks, local broadcasters and the in-house DTV and replay system. In part, Gepco's cable products and accessories will help capture and transmit the fast-paced action of the NBA to viewers throughout Memphis and the world.
According to Bob Ferrulo, president of the HD Group, one of the unique aspects of the application was the length of the cable runs without splicing. This was due to the minimal amount of cable tray available in the building.
"It was probably one of the most demanding applications we've had for cabling in such a large venue," Ferrulo stated. "One of the factors for turning to Gepco was the durability of the cable for such a demanding application. Pulling that amount of cable through the building with a small amount of cable tray was a tall order. In essence, we had to pull direct runs through seven levels of the building, down from the ground truck level, up to the catwalk of the arena, and some of those pulls were 1000 to 1500 feet. Without using cable tray, you can only imagine the amount of conduit and risers that we had to go through to pull the cable. The strength of the Gepco cable to work after all that pulling was pretty amazing."
"Other benefits for using Gepco in this application were the sales and technical assistance before and during the installation, and the logistical support that Gepco provided in supplying the cable that we needed when we needed it," Ferrulo continued. "They also supported our installation team with a lot of ancillary stuff that is unique to Gepco, supplying us with connectors, tools and test equipment for this particular application."
With its prime location, FedExForum will tie directly into the heart of downtown Memphis, featuring outdoor entertainment and party areas and a 35,000 square-foot exterior plaza. Inside the arena, guests will be treated to comforts and amenities such as wider seats and aisles, two main concourses, restaurants, lounges and a casual sports bar. Along with serving as the home to the Memphis Grizzlies, the FedExForum will host events ranging from concerts and hockey to ice-skating, exhibitions, circuses, family shows, rodeos and indoor motor sports. Gepco cable will play a part in all of this action. The Grizzlies' first exhibition game at the FedExForum is scheduled for October 14.
