Gepco Connects Mi Casa Studios' DVD Mix Facility
with 5596GFC Digital Audio Multi-Pair Cables

"Wire May Not Be the Flashy Part of a Studio, but Without Reliable Wires and Connectors, the Studio Could Not Function"

Mi Casa Studios' all-digital mixing facility, which specializes in DVD projects, is wired from top to bottom with Gepco digital audio cable. The studio, whose DVD project credits include Total Recall, Twin Peaks and Blow, needed high reliability to maintain a strong creative workflow and, to realize that goal, Mi Casa turned to Gepco's 5596GFC wide bandwidth digital audio multi-pair cables to keep the facility humming at a flawless pace.

"We run AES-standard digital audio throughout the facility, including our two rooms, both of our studios and our DVD mixing facilities," says Mi Casa partner and chief engineer Brant Biles. "We prepare the audio for movies and all the related materials that go along with a particular DVD release. This can include the audio for deleted scenes or the director's commentaries," adds partner Robert Margouleff, also a Grammy Award-winning engineer and producer.

Mi Casa is housed in the former home of Hollywood film legend Bella Lugosi. While the building itself is old, the infrastructure is thoroughly modern, running audio through two Z-Systems 64 x 64 pair digital switchers that feed the two mixing studios. Gepco 5596GFC wire handles the multitude of tentacles that come out from those switchers to connect racks of digital processing equipment.

"Wire may not be the flashy part of a studio, but without reliable wire and connectors, the studio could not function," states Margouleff. "With the high-level clientele that we service, our studio has to be up and running 100 percent, all the time. We can't stop to trace a bad connection. We have been using the Gepco-based infrastructure for about a year and it has been totally dependable. We haven't had one place where there might be a break or a problem. The Gepco 5596GFC wire has been performing flawlessly for us since we installed it. Gepco wire gives us a high level of confidence that everything is connected, and that it will stay connected. This level of certainty about infrastructure performance allows us to focus on a project and the creative flow with a client, and that is what our business is all about."

The 5596 series features an extended 12.3 MHz bandwidth, ultra-low attenuation, mechanical stability and a precision 110-ohm impedance. With the lowest available attenuation (20% to 60% lower than other types) and precision impedance specifications, the 5596 series allows for longer runs of AES3 format digital audio over twisted-pair cable. The extended 12.3 MHz bandwidth is compliant with the 1999 revision of the AES3 standard for transmission of digital audio at sampling rates up to 96 kHz. The series is available in an easy-to-terminate version for permanent installations and an extra-flexible version for rack patching or portable cables.
